Rev. Eric Severson’s Witness Resonates Far Beyond UUFoM

Recently our minister, Rev. Eric Severson, responded to a call from religious leaders across the country to stand in solidarity with communities impacted by immigration enforcement actions. Rev. Eric traveled to Minneapolis as part of a multifaith delegation offering prayerful presence, compassionate witness, and faithful support rooted in our Unitarian Universalist values of justice, dignity, and mutual care.

During his time there he heard a heartbreaking story that stayed with him — and with many who have since heard it. Amid the ongoing crisis, a volunteer offered to deliver breastmilk to a hungry baby, highlighting the very real human needs at the center of the broader political and legal conflicts facing immigrant families. This moment of raw vulnerability deeply moved those gathered and helped ground the larger struggle in everyday human compassion.

When UUFoM member Sarah Schulz shared on scoial media about Rev. Eric’s witness and the impact of that story on social media, the post was shared widely — including by A Mighty Girl, a platform known for amplifying stories of courage and resilience. What began as a local reflection quickly resonated with people well beyond our congregation, inviting many into deeper reflection about care, community, and shared humanity.

When asked to comment on the attention the post received, Rev. Eric replied, “The story is more important than the teller.

That sentiment reflects both his leadership and our UU understanding that faithful service is not about recognition, but about lifting up the voices of those whose lives remind us of the sacred worth of every person.

We celebrate the ways this witness has drawn attention to the human realities behind complex issues and are grateful for the many hearts and minds opened through this shared story.
